What are accordion lines?

Accordion lines are the fine vertical lines that appear on the cheeks, particularly when smiling or during facial expression. They may become more noticeable over time and vary between individuals.

What causes accordion lines?

Accordion lines usually develop as a result of several factors working together, including:

• Individual facial anatomy and genetics.
• Gradual changes in skin quality and elasticity with age.
• Changes in the fat and supporting tissues of the face.
• The platysma neck muscle contributes in some people.
• Weight loss
• Repeated facial expression.
• Sun exposure and other environmental factors.

The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin quality, facial anatomy and the relationship between the cheeks, mid-face and surrounding facial structures. We’ll also assess how facial movement and neck tension contributes to the appearance of the lines. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Accordion lines are not always caused by changes in the skin alone. In some people, changes in the cheeks, supporting tissues or facial movement also contribute to their appearance. Because several factors may be involved,a comprehensive assessment helps identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate, individualised management.
