What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that affects the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. It may present as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, deeper lumps or cysts and most commonly affects the face, chest and back. Acne can occur at any age and varies in severity from person to person.
What causes acne?
Acne usually develops as a result of several factors working together, including:
The factors contributing to acne vary between individuals, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.
Assessment
During your consultation, we’ll assess the type and severity of your acne, the areas affected, your skin quality and whether there is any evidence of scarring or pigmentation. We’ll also discuss your medical history, hormonal status, previous treatments and any lifestyle or hormonal factors that may be contributing to your skin concerns. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine what management is appropriate for you. We will talk about skin care and appropriate sun protection.
Why assessment is important
Not all acne is the same. Different types of acne may require different approaches, and some people may have more than one contributing factor. Early assessment may also help identify people at increased risk of developingacne scars. A comprehensive assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.
Individualised management
During your consultation, we’ll discuss options for management for your individual concerns. We’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care. In some cases you may be referred for blood tests, and potentially referred to a dermatologist if needed. We see all age ranges and genders for acne management.
