Forehead lines

What are forehead lines?

Forehead lines are the horizontal lines that develop across the forehead. They are usually most noticeable when raisingthe eyebrows but may become visible even when the face is relaxed over time.

What causes forehead lines?

Forehead lines usually develop as a result of several factors working together, including:

The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess how the forehead muscles work together with your eyebrows, upper eyelids and surrounding facial structures. We will identify the shape of your underlying muscles and their strength. We’ll also assess your skin quality, the amount of supporting fat, the shape of the forehead bone, facial anatomy and the way your face moves during expression. This helps us understand the underlying cause of your concern and whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Forehead lines are closely related to the position and function of the eyebrows and upper eyelids. In some people, forehead muscle activity helps support eyebrow position or compensate for heavy upper eyelids. This is an important role that must not be lost. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern and may affect the balance and function of the upper face and ability to elevate your eyebrows. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.

Individualised management

During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
