Glabella (Frown) Lines

What are glabellar lines?

Glabella lines, often called frown lines, are the vertical lines that develop between the eyebrows. They are usually most noticeable when frowning or concentrating (dynamic lines) but may over time become visible even when the face is relaxed over time (resting lines) which may remain to some degree in spite of various treatments.

What causes glabella lines?

Glabella lines usually develop as a result of several factors working together, including:

The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess how the muscles of the upper face work together, along with your skin quality, facial anatomy and the position of your eyebrows and upper eyelids. This helps us understand the underlying cause of your concern and whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Glabella lines are only one part of how the upper face functions. They are a part of a complex of muscles that all work as a team, muscles that elevate, others depress, some push inwards, and some pull up and out or down. In some people, the position of the supporting brow bone, eyebrows, upper eyelids or surrounding muscles also contribute to the appearance of these lines. Individuals also have bony foramen (important holes in the skull that transmit nerves arteries and veins) in the brow area that are inportant to identify. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern and may affect the balance of the upper face or eyelid resting position affecting symmetry or even vision. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.

Individualised management

During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
