Jowls

What are jowls?

Jowls refer to changes in the contour along the lower face and jawline that may develop over time. They often appear as a loss of definition between the jawline and neck and are a common part of facial ageing. They appear as fatty pouches that hang below the jaw line. The extent of these changes varies between individuals.

What causes jowls?

Jowls usually develop as a result of several factors working together, including:

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess your sides and lower face, jawline, chin, neck, fat, skin quality and facial anatomy as a whole. We’ll also assess how the supporting structures of the face contribute to changes in jawline definition. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Jowls are not usually caused by a single factor. In many people, predisposing bone under development, changes in the cheeks, jawline, chin, skin and supporting tissues all contribute to their appearance. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern or achieve an outcome that meets your expectations. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.

Individualised management

During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
