What is menopausal skin?

Menopausal skin refers to the changes in the skin that may occur during the years leading up to menopause (perimenopause), throughout menopause and afterwards.These changes vary considerably between individuals and are influenced by hormonal changes, genetics, lifestyle and overall skin health.

What causes menopausal skin?

Changes associated with menopausal skin usually result from several factors working together, including:

• Declining oestrogen levels.
• Gradual changes in collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
• Reduced skin hydration and barrier function.
• Changes in skin thickness and elasticity.
• Sun exposure and other environmental factors.
• Individual genetics and overall health.

The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin quality, hydration, pigmentation, elasticity and facial anatomy. We’ll also discuss your medical history, menopausal symptoms, current medications and skincare routine to better understand the factors contributing to your skin concerns. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Changes in menopausal skin are not caused by hormonal changes alone. Sun exposure, genetics, lifestyle, existingskin conditions and overall health also influence the way the skin changes over time. A comprehensive assessment helps identify the factors contributing to your concerns and guides appropriate, individualised management. Where appropriate, your care may involve collaboration with your GP, gynaecologist or other healthcare professionals.

If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, as well as advice on skincare and long-term skin health, so you can make an informed decision about your care..We work with your usual General Practitioner when dealing with these concerns.
