What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the natural lines that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They are present in most people and may become more noticeable over time. The depth and appearance of these folds varies between individuals and is influenced by both facial anatomy and the ageing process.
What causes nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds usually become more noticeable as a result of several factors working together, including:
The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.
Assessment
During your consultation, we’ll assess the nasolabial folds in the context of your whole face. This includes the underlying bone structure, the cheeks, mid-face, skin quality, facial anatomy and the way the surrounding structures contribute to the appearance of the folds. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether any management is appropriate for you.
Why assessment is important
Nasolabial folds are not always the primary concern. In many people, changes in the cheeks, surrounding tissues or facial structure contribute to their appearance. The area contains important blood vessels. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern or achieve an outcome that meets your expectations. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.
Individualised management
During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with theexpected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
