What are scars?
A scar is a natural part of the body’s healing process following an injury or inflammation of the skin. Scars may develop after surgery, trauma, burns, acne or other skin conditions. Their appearance varies considerably depending on the cause, the location on the body and individual healing characteristics.
What causes scars?
Scars develop as part of the body’s normal wound healing response. Their appearance may be influenced by several factors, including:
Every scar is different, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.
Assessment
During your consultation, we’ll assess the type, location and maturity of your scar, together with your skin quality and medical history. We’ll also consider how the scar developed and whether it is continuing to change. Understanding the underlying cause and stage of healing helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.
Why assessment is important
Scars continue to change as they mature, and not all scars behave in the same way. Some remain flat and settle naturally, while others become raised, thickened, widened or may affect movement depending on their location.Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying characteristics of the scar or achieve an outcome that meets your expectations. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.
Individualised management
During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
