Sensitive Skin

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is a common concern where the skin reacts more easily to products or environmental factors. People with sensitive skin may notice redness, stinging, burning, dryness, tightness or irritation. In many cases, these symptoms are associated with changes in the skin’s natural protective barrier.

What causes sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin may develop as a result of several factors working together, including:

The underlying cause varies from person to person, making an individual assessment an important part of the consultation.

Assessment

During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin, your skincare routine, any products you are using and your medical history. We’ll also consider whether an underlying skin condition or changes to the skin barrier may be contributing to your symptoms. Understanding theunderlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.

Why assessment is important

Sensitive skin is not a diagnosis on its own and may have several contributing factors. In some people, an impaired skin barrier is the main cause, while in others an underlying inflammatory skin condition or contact reaction may be responsible. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.

Individualised management

During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks. We’ll also provide advice on skincare and strategies to help support a healthy skin barrier.
