What is skin laxity?
Skin laxity refers to a gradual reduction in skin firmness and elasticity over time. It may affect the face, neck or other areas of the body and is a common part of the natural ageing process. The degree of skin laxity varies considerably between individuals. There are some medical conditions that affect skin elasticity. Skin firmness is a spectrum rather than an all or nothing property.
What causes skin laxity?
Skin laxity usually develops as a result of several factors working together, including:
Assessment
During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin quality, elasticity, facial anatomy and the supporting structures beneath the skin. We’ll also consider how changes in different areas of the face or neck and body contribute toyour overall concerns. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.
Why assessment is important
Reduced skin firmness is not always caused by changes in the skin alone. In many people, changes in the supporting tissues, facial volume or underlying facial structure also contribute to the overall appearance. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern or achieve an outcome that meets your expectations. A careful assessment helps guide appropriate, individualised management.
Individualised management
During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
