What are under-eye bags?
Under-eye or infra-orbital bags refer to fullness or swelling beneath the lower eyelids. They may be present from a young age or become more noticeable over time. The appearance can vary from person to person and may affect one or both eyes.
What causes under-eye bags?
Under-eye bags can develop as a result of several factors, including:
Assessment
During your consultation, we’ll assess the under eye fat pads, your lower eyelids, skin quality and if there is any excess, bone and fat and general facial anatomy and the surrounding structures of the cheeks and eyes. We’ll also consider your medical history and any factors that may contribute to changes in this area. Understanding the underlying cause helps determine whether management is appropriate for you.
Why assessment is important
Not all under-eye bags have the same cause. In some people, the appearance is primarily related to prominent fat beneath the eyes, while in others fluid retention, skin changes or the surrounding facial structures also contribute. Under-eye bags may also occur alongside hollow eyes or dark circles, and these concerns often require different approaches. Without a comprehensive assessment, management may not address the underlying cause of the concern or achieve an outcome that meets your expectations.
Individualised management
During your consultation, we’ll discuss whether management is appropriate for your individual concerns. If so, we’ll explain the available options, together with the expected benefits, limitations and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
